This month: IMEO 2025 shows rising measurement-based reporting, Rystad’s satellites flag a methane rebound, and OGCI reports lower carbon and methane intensity. We cover EUMR implementation moves, a new industry carbon-accounting coalition, and RMI’s OCI+ relaunch. Plus: three Highwood OGMP 2.0 Gold wins and new training.
IMEO 2025 Report Shows Growing Gold Standard Coverage
UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) has released its 2025 progress report, showing steady gains in transparency and reporting quality. Nearly one-third of global oil and gas production is now recognized at Gold Standard levels, driven by real-world measurement. Seven companies reached the highest level of reporting within their first two years, a strong signal of accelerating maturity. (Read more)
Highwood Clients Achieve OGMP 2.0 Gold
We helped several operators reach OGMP 2.0 Gold. Devon Energy, Civitas Resources, and Triple Crown Resources chose to share their stories publicly case studies that show what effective, measurement-based reporting looks like in practice. (Read the case studies)
Rystad Data Points to Methane Emissions Rebound
Rystad Energy reports rising methane emissions from onshore oil and gas, reversing steady declines since 2020. In Q1 2025, roughly 45,000 plumes were detected representing a 40% year-over-year increase. China saw the biggest increase, while Russia’s fell 5% with lower production. The data highlights the need for consistent monitoring and targeted reduction programs that deliver measurable results. (Read the analysis)
OGCI Reports Continued Decarbonization Progress
The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) 2025 Progress Report shows solid momentum: upstream carbon intensity is 24% lower than in 2017, methane intensity is down 62%, and routine flaring has dropped 72% since 2018. Explore OGCI’s Methane Library for key tools and data resources. (See report)
Industry Proposes Practical EUMR Principles
IOGP, Eurogas, and partners have submitted three principles to guide how tracing should be addressed under the EU Methane Regulation: proportionality, efficiency, and implementability. Their recommendations aim to align compliance with cost-effective, proven measurement approaches. (Learn more)
Consultation for EEMDL Protocol Extended to Dec 1st
UT Austin’s Center for Energy and Environmental Systems Analysis (CEESA) has extended its public consultation on the draft EEMDL Protocol to December 1st. The protocol is designed to strengthen global consistency in methane measurement, verification, and data quality. Companion tools for verification and provisional reporting are also in development. New Industry-Led Carbon Accounting Coalition
A new alliance, Carbon Measures, brings together 20 major firms, including ExxonMobil and BlackRock’s Global Infrastructure Partners, to create a unified standard for carbon accounting across the energy sector. The group aims for transparent, comparable reporting that can guide better investment decisions. (Details)
RMI Relaunches OCI+
RMI has relaunched its Oil Climate Index Plus (OCI+), an expanded tool for assessing full-value-chain emissions from oil and gas. OCI+ helps operators and investors understand lifecycle climate impacts and identify the biggest opportunities for methane and energy waste reduction. (Read article)
Breakthrough in LNG Methane Slip
Three Japanese firms report a 98% reduction in methane slip from LNG-fueled ships, nearly eliminating a long-standing challenge in marine operations. The result shows how targeted engineering and collaboration can deliver near-zero emissions in practice. (Read more)
