PETRONAS Signs Supply Agreement for Greece
PETRONAS of Malaysia and METLEN have signed a five-year LNG supply agreement beginning in 2027. The agreement brings approximately 0.6 billion cubic meters annually to Greece, which falls under the jurisdiction of the EU Methane Regulation. (Read more)
North Africa More Exposed to EU Methane Regulation
A new KAPSARC discussion paper finds North African oil and gas exporters face greater exposure to the EU Methane Regulation due to high dependence on EU markets, weaker MRV capacity, and higher methane intensities. (Read more)
Potential Canadian LNG Supply to Europe
Ukraine’s Naftogaz and Kino Aski LNG have signed an MoU to explore long-term supplies of low-carbon Canadian LNG to Europe from the proposed First Nations-led Quebec project. (Read more)
Methane Abatement Could Recover 20 bcm of Gas for EU Supply
A new Climate Action Network analysis estimates that existing methane-abatement technologies could recover approximately 20 bcm of gas annually from the EU’s eight largest gas suppliers. The report estimates that 29% of potential methane reductions among these suppliers could be achieved at negative net cost. (Read more)
Research Digest 021
Featuring eight new studies on methane measurement and mitigation, Research Digest 021 covers top-down benchmarking of U.S. inventories, methane intensity at marginal wells and across Algerian production, the limits of gas import standards, and controlled-release testing in France. (Read the digest)
Methane Featured Prominently at Climate Week NYC
New York’s 2026 Climate Week sessions included discussions on methane MRV, the EU Methane Regulation, and super-emitter action. (Read more)
IGU Calls for Flexible Approach to Methane Regulation
The International Gas Union stated at GECF’s 6th Methane Emissions Reduction Workshop that global average upstream oil and gas methane intensity has declined 10% since 2019. IGU argues methane regulations should not be “one size fits all” and instead account for differences between regions and infrastructure. (Read more)
Memorandum Signed Regarding Southeast Asia Methane Testing Centre
PETRONAS, JOGMEC, JGC, and TotalEnergies have signed an agreement to establish and operate the Southeast Asia Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Centre (SEA METEC) in Malaysia. The regional centre will evaluate methane technologies and support implementation of technologies aligned with OGMP 2.0. (Read more)
Colorado Strengthens Oil and Gas Methane Regulations
Colorado has approved updates to its oil and gas regulations that will exceed the EPA’s 2024 methane standards. The measures are forecasted to help Colorado avoid $42M in climate change-related costs. (Read more)
Certified Natural Gas Production Expands Across North America
A new market analysis developed for ERM’s Natural Gas Supply Collaborative finds certified natural gas now represents a meaningful share of North American production, with the Appalachian and Montney regions accounting for the largest volumes. (Read more)
Argentina’s Neuquén Province Developing Methane Regulations
Neuquén, home to most of Argentina’s Vaca Muerta oil and gas basin, has joined the Fossil Fuel Regulatory Programme to develop methane regulations covering emissions mitigation and monitoring. (Read more)
GHGSat Announces Next-Generation Methane Satellite
GHGSat has announced its second-generation methane-monitoring satellite, which has twice the performance of its current satellites. Scheduled for launch in early 2028, the satellite is designed to detect onshore methane emissions down to 50 kg/h while covering 20,000 km² per day. (Read more)
MethaneSAT Highlights Emissions from Low-Producing Wells
A new MethaneSAT analysis estimates low-producing U.S. well sites account for roughly 60% of production-related methane emissions despite contributing only 5% of oil and gas production. Their estimated methane intensity was 16% compared with 0.6% for higher-producing wells. (Read more)
New on Monday Morning Methane: The Greenwashing Risk in Emissions Reporting
Thomas Fox is joined by Maya Douglas and Conor Chell of KPMG’s Sustainability, Environment, and Regulatory Law practice. Maya and Conor assess corporate communications for greenwashing risk, and emissions claims make up a growing share of that work. In Canada, greenwashing is a regulatory offence. Maya finds the data usually holds up; it is the presentation that fails. (Watch now)
